UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Point Park's
Aiden Burford and
Liam Hein placed at Saturday's John Carroll Open in University Heights, Ohio.
Burford finished second in the 141 blue bracket, while Hein finished fourth in the 149 navy bracket.
Burford won by fall over Eric Saddler (unattached) in the opening round, before defeating RIT's Amari Payton by decision (8-3) in the quarterfinals. Burford advanced to the bracket final with a semifinal tech fall decision over John Carroll's Chase Morgan, 17-1. He fell to Ohio U's Prestyn Parks by a 4-2 decision in the final.
Hein dropped his opening match by fall to Seton Hill's Ethan Higgins. He then won three-consecutive bouts in the consolation rounds to advance to the third-place match. Each of his victories featured bonus points, including a tech fall, major decision and a fall. He dropped the third-place match by decision against RIT's Marco Rivera.
Isaac Placencia won two bouts in the 165 blue bracket (by tech fall and fall), while
Charles Perkins picked up a fall victory over Akron's Joshua Williams at 174.
The Pioneers will have a few week's off, before wrapping up their inaugural season on Saturday, March 14 at the NCWA Mideast event.
