WASHINGTON, Pa. – Point Park baseball blanked Cal (PA) to pick up a 5-0 non-conference victory on Wednesday afternoon at EQT Park in Washington.
In the top of the second with runners on second and third following a sac-bunt by
Josh Zambito, Point Park got on the board with an RBI single by
Felix Gonzalez to bring home
Luis Gonzalez from third.
Nicholas Briones made it 2-0 on a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed
Trevor Jones to cross home plate.
In the fourth,
Felix Gonzalez doubled and then advanced ot third on an error by the Cal U shortstop. Later in the inning, he scored on a wild pitch to put the Pioneers in front by a 3-0 score.
The advantage stayed the same until the eighth when Cal walked in a PPU run during
Chris Williams' at-bat. The bases were loaded during the at-bat.
In the ninth,
Olindo Pezzone put a stamp on the win with a solo home run to left field – his team-leading ninth home run of the season.
Point Park used seven arms on Wednesday to earn the five-hit shutout.
Noah Jordan (1-0) made the start and pitched three innings, earning the bullpen day win.
The Point Park pitching staff allowed just five hits, four of which were singles. The staff recorded five strikeouts.
PPU returns to EQT Park on Friday to host the University of Charleston. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
