Pioneers Downed by Griffins 3-1 in Season Opener

Fusay makes five saves in defeat

PITTSBURGH -- Point Park men's soccer fell in its season opener to Seton Hill on Thursday by a final score of 3-1 at F.N.B. Stadium. The Griffins (1-0) were led by three second-half goals in the victory.

Point Park (0-1) was led by a spirited effort from goalkeeper Anthony Fusay. A transfer from Lincoln Memorial University, Fusay recorded five saves in his Pioneer debut including a leaping save that came just over 15 minutes into the game to just tip a shot from Esteban Moreira over the cross bar. Fusay tallied three first-half saves.

Point Park's lone attempt on goal in the first half came from Gabriel Okita, whose shot was handled by SHU goalkeeper Jannik Reiss.

After a 30-minute lightning delay during halftime, Fusay continued his heroics with two within the first five minutes of the half. He denied Mikkel Steenstrup with a sprawling effort, and later closed the door on a shot from Rafael Santos.

The Griffins managed to pot three consecutive goals in 10 minutes with Santos (60th minute), Tomas Gomes (64th minute) and Steenstrup (67th minute) all denting the twine. Leo Lambert led the game with two assists, as he set up the first and third Griffin goals.

The Pioneers managed to break the shutout, however, when Hugo Ferreira, a junior transfer from Paris, France, managed to sidestep Reiss and deposit a shot into the empty net with eight seconds to play.

Santos led the match with seven shots and three shots on goal. Alejandro Vega's three shots led the Pioneers, with Okita, Ferreira and Nikolas Suarez all registering a shot on goal. Reiss made two saves in the win, with Fusay tallying five saves for Point Park in the defeat.

The Pioneers will continue their four-game homestand on Sunday when they welcome to D'Youville the F.N.B. Stadium. Opening kick is scheduled for 4 p.m.
