CLERMONT, Fla. – Point Park University softball wrapped up its trip to Florida Friday going 1-1 against Bethel (Ind.) College and Lourdes University at the National Training Center.
The Pioneers (2-10) scored six runs in the fourth inning against Bethel College (0-6) to enact the mercy rule in game one, winning 10-0.
Freshman Erica Burns hit a triple to start off the big inning, and put the Pioneers up 5-0 with no outs in the top of the fourth. Senior outfielder Taylor Geary hit a double to score Becca Babincak, and sophomore Jess Beitler hit her third home run of the season to make the score 8-0.
Geary and Beitler both went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
Freshman pitcher Ashley Iagnemma (2-4) got the start on the mound for Point Park, allowing three hits in five innings and striking out eight.
In game two, Lourdes University (5-5) scored three runs in the first inning, but Point Park cut the lead to 3-1 in the third when Burns hit a single and Geary tripled to send her home. Lourdes scored four runs in the fourth to go up 7-1, and the Pioneers were unable to make up the runs, losing 9-1 in five innings.
Pioneers Brittany Zeigler and Geary each went 2 for 2, and Burns went 2 for 3.
Senior Hannah Harley (0-5) pitched four innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits before Michaela Lewis-Lambert took the mound for one inning of work. Lewis-Lambert allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits.
The Pioneers return to Pittsburgh to face Malone (Ohio) University in a doubleheader March 14 at 3 p.m. at Fairhaven Park.
