NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Point Park University softball split a pair of River States Conference games with Indiana University Southeast Friday, winning 4-3 in game one and losing 4-2 in the nightcap during this week's RSC Game of the Week.
It was a battle for higher seeding in the RSC standings, with IU Southeast, Point Park, Midway and WVU Tech currently tied with a 10-6 conference record.
The Pioneers (19-18, 10-6 RSC) went back and forth with the Grenadiers (22-19, 10-6) in game one. Point Park scored a run in the first, and IU Southeast answered in the bottom.
Likewise, the score ended up tied, 2-2, heading into the top of the third.
Point Park capitalized off two errors and three hits to put two runs on the board, making the score 4-2 in the top of the third.
The Grenadiers added a run in the bottom of the fourth off a triple and a ground-out that scored the run, but the Pioneers defense kept it locked down until the end.
Sophomore RHP Ashley Iagnemma (SO/Bridgeville, Pa) pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out four.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers battled back from a 3-0 deficit heading into the top of the fourth.
Down three runs, senior Becca Babincak (SR/Gibsonia, Pa) singled and stole second. Lily Pruneda (JR/Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) singled to put Babincak at third, and stole to put both runners in scoring position.
Junior Kim Corcoran (JR/Cheswick, Pa) singled down the middle to bring in Babincak, and Jess Beitler singled to right to bring in Pruneda and make the score 3-2.
IU Southeast's pitcher put away Point Park batters in the following innings, and the Grenadiers scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score, 4-2.
Tiffany Edwards (SO/Deer Lakes, Pa.) took the loss on the mound for the Pioneers, allowing four runs on six hits, walking three and striking out one in 5.1 innings.
Katie Tarr (FR/Burgettstown, Pa.) struck out one in relief.
Point Park travels to Brescia University for its final doubleheader of the season tomorrow. Game time has been moved up to a 12 p.m. start due to the threat of inclement weather.
