Florida National gets victory in Point Park's home opener

PITTSBURGH -- A talented Florida National University squad got the victory during Point Park University's men's soccer home opener on Wednesday evening, a 4-0 result for the visiting Conquistador's from Miami, Fla.

Florida National (3-0), which is seeking NAIA status for the future, was a tough team for any side to face in its season opener, and Point Park (0-1) was not able to muster any goals to match the visitor's attack.

FNU built a 3-0 lead at the half although it was some great work by Pioneers goalkeeper Juan Somoza to keep the score within three after 45 minutes. Somoza, a transfer from Campbellsville (Ky.), made nine of his 10 total saves during a busy first half under fire.

FNU got its first goal at the 13:42 mark when Rodrigo Costa made a good individual move after taking a long pass. The score was 2-0 when FNU was able to get a goal three seconds before the half, which made it 3-0 off a corner kick.

The score remained 3-0 until late in the game when Marco Shimizu made a nice strike down the left side in the 78th minute, the only time Somoza was beaten after halftime.

Point Park gets right back into action this weekend with another home game Saturday versus Lawrence Tech (Mich.). Kickoff is 12 p.m. at Highmark Stadium. Admission is Free, and the live stream will once again be available on the Point Park Sports Network. Subscribe at PointParkSports.com/Live.
