Pioneers make it four straight wins, extend shut-out streak to four

PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University men's soccer made it four straight wins and four straight shutouts after Saturday's 4-0 victory over NAIA non-conference University of Pikeville (Ky.) at Highmark Stadium.

The Pioneers (4-2) scored two goals in each half with Alan Ramos doing the work the first 45 minutes and Mitchell Roell doing the scoring the second 45. The Point Park defense continued to keep the opponent off the scoreboard, and it extended things to 370 straight minutes without allowing a goal.

Ramos and Roell have gotten the scoring touch going during the win streak. Ramos scored in the 20th and 37th minutes versus Pikeville to give him five goals the last three games. Roell scored two goals in the 69th minute to put the game away. He has scored in four straight games with a total of five goals in that span.

Roberto Whitley set up the first goal of the game when he crossed into Ramos. It was the team-high fifth assist of the year for Whitley, who has scored points in five straight games. With Point Park guarding the 2-0 lead, Giovoni Lebrun put a cross into Roell to set up the third goal.

Point Park controlled things heavily versus Pikeville with a 29-1 advantage in shots and 16-1 edge in shots on goal. Ryan Daniels played all 90 minutes as Pioneers goalkeeper and registered his third shutout in three starts this year.

The Pioneers play one more pre-conference game Monday at Washington Adventist (7 p.m.). That will finish up a busy stretch of five games in 10 days. And since the Sept. 21 matchup at Villa Maria (N.Y.) College was cancelled by Villa Maria, it will mean a 10-day break before the River States Conference opener Sept. 28 at Asbury (Ky.) University.
