Point Park wins at Rio Grande, Webb surpasses 300 career saves

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- Point Park University women's soccer notched three big points in the River States Conference standings with Monday's 3-1 victory at University of Rio Grande (Ohio). The Pioneers (5-10-1, 3-4-1 RSC) built a 3-0, halftime lead and made a second-half stand to secure the road win.

Point Park senior goalkeeper Ashtyn Webb registered a big milestone surpassing 300 career saves. Webb had seven in the victory, including six in the second half when Rio Grande (4-12, 4-4 RSC) made a big push to attempt a comeback.

The Pioneers had a big first half with not only the three goals but a 15-8 advantage in shots. Tia Horew got the scoring going in the 10th minute when she stole a loose ball and scored on an empty net.

Nola McGuire made the score 2-0 in the 29th minute by dribbling into the box and poking one past the goalkeeper. Taylor Goldstrohm scored off a rebound in the 31st minute to make it a three-goal game.

Rio Grande flipped the script the second half and mounted 14 shots compared to just six for Point Park. Still, the RedStorm could not break through until the 89th minute. Ambar Torres notched Rio Grande's only goal of the game on a penalty kick with just 1:52 remaining.

Webb now has 304 saves in her 52 career games. The London, Ohio, native has led the Pioneers to 24 wins in three years as a starter. Rio Grande ended up with a 22-21 advantage in shots, but the Point Park defense held strong.

With the win, Point Park moved into a three-way tie for the sixth-and-final playoff spot in the RSC. With 10 points in the standings, Point Park (3-4-1 RSC) is tied with Cincinnati Christin (3-4-1 RSC) and Midway (Ky.) (3-5-1 RSC) for sixth place.

Point Park has two regular-season games remaining with both of them at home this weekend. The Pioneers host Cincinnati Christian on Thursday at 4 p.m. and host Brescia (Ky.) on Saturday at 12 p.m. Both games will be played at Montour Junction Sports Complex in Coraopolis, Pa.
