PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University volleyball started off its River States Conference East-West crossover weekend with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Midway (Ky.) University on Friday night in the Student Center Gym. The Pioneers (19-8, 9-4 RSC) won the match, 25-20, 25-13, 25-16.
Point Park and the Eagles (14-13, 5-7 RSC) battled through a fairly close opening set, but the Pioneers came through with the win. The second set was also close for the first part with the Pioneers holding on to a 13-11 lead. Point Park put the frame away with a 12-2 run to close it out.
The Pioneers made it a sweep by getting out to leads of 16-5 and 20-10 in the third. In addition to the 36 total kills as a team, the Pioneers scored eight points on service aces and eight points on blocks.
Taylor Small put up a team-high 10 kills. Maria Ferragonio led in digs with 15 and also added seven kills. Julia Menosky totaled 10 assists and 10 digs. Brittney Bianco chipped in 10 assists. Madison Sima and Haley English pounded out six kills apiece.
Midway outside hitter Alysha Tullar had 10 kills and .103 as the Pioneers held the RSC kills leader in fairly good check. The Eagles hit just .072 as a team going around the Pioneers' block and encountering 43 total digs from Point Park. The Pioneers hit .261 for the night and registered double-digit kills in each set.
Point Park plays at home again on Saturday versus Asbury (Ky.) (11-12, 7-5 RSC). Match time is 12 p.m. at the Student Center Gym. The Pioneers extended their lead in the RSC East division and are now 1.5 matches clear of the the next team. WVU Tech (7-5 RSC) won at IU East (7-6 RSC), 3-2, on Friday to push the Red Wolves down to third place.
