Point Park women come up cold in loss at (RV) WVU Tech

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Riding a hot streak of four straight victories, Point Park University women's basketball hit a cold day and lost, 78-60, at (RV) WVU Tech on Saturday. The Golden Bears (20-8, 15-1 RSC) avenged an earlier loss to the Pioneers (12-14, 8-7 RSC), who are the only RSC team to beat them this season.

Point Park had its four-game win streak stopped by shooting just 36 percent overall and 26 percent (8 for 31) from 3-point range. WVU Tech countered with a solid 42-percent. Although the Golden Bears also had their struggles shooting 4 for 22 from the outside, they pounded things inside for 42 points in the paint.

WVU Tech had four players reach double digits led by center Laura Requena with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Point guard Savannah Shamblin added 17 points, and Britney and Whitney Justice scored 11 and 10, respectively. WVU Tech shared the wealth with 21 assists and just seven turnovers.

Sam Weir posted another double-double of 13 points and 17 rebounds for Point Park. Baylie Mook scored in double digits for the third game in a row with 11, and Kaitlyn Smith added 10.

WVU Tech had a lead of 17-11 at the end of the first quarter and 34-25 at the half. Point Park was 3 for 15 from the outside the first 20 minutes. The Pioneers did hit five treys the second half, but WVU Tech was able to build on its lead of 57-44 after three.

Point Park's scoring was mainly relegated to field goals as the Pioneers shot only two free throws, making both. WVU Tech had the advantage from the foul line making 14 of 19.

After Saturday's results around the league, Point Park remains in third place in the RSC East Division. The Pioneers are 2.0 games behind second-place IU East (12-15, 10-5 RSC) with two games to play. The Red Wolves come to Point Park on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

Point Park would have to beat IU East, win at Ohio Christian Feb. 16 and have IU East lose to Carlow that same day to make up the ground needed to get second place and a home playoff game.
