Pioneers fall Friday night at Midway (Ky.)

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Point Park University volleyball started out its weekend road trip with a 3-0 loss at Midway (Ky.) University on Friday night. The River States Conference matchup went to the Eagles by scores of 25-20, 25-17, 25-21.

Midway (6-1, 4-0 RSC) stayed unbeaten in the conference and won its sixth straight by out-gunning the Pioneers, 38-21, on kills. Point Park (1-3, 1-3 RSC) stays in Kentucky to play at Asbury (Ky.) for another RSC match on Saturday at 12 p.m.

Point Park scored five straight points to get within 23-19 in the first set. But Midway held off the Pioneers for the early lead, 1-0.

Midway got out to early control of the second set as well and built a 13-7 lead. Point Park stayed within reach at 16-12 on a kill by Madison Sima and again within 20-16 on a kill by Camryn LaMonaca. But that was as close as the Pioneers got in that set as Midway went to its biggest hitters Alysha Tullar and Brooke Trompler to close out the set, 25-17.

Point Park got out to a 10-5 lead in the third. But Midway pulled even at 12-12, and the teams went back and forth for the next 14 points. The third set was tied at 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18. Then Tullar came up with a big kill for the 19-18 lead, and Midway did not trail again. A service ace and a couple of Point Park errors gave the Eagles the cushion to win.

Point Park's kills came from Jazlyn Rozier, Amanda Contois and LaMonaca with five each and Sima with four. Elise Wallace had a team-high 11 assists, and Star Lakin tallied seven. The back row had Ashley Castelli come up with 13 digs, and Micaela Shevell and LaMonaca with six each.

Trompler had a big match for Midway with 10 kills -- all of which came the first two sets -- and also 14 digs. Tullar finished with nine kills with most of those in the third. The Eagles also got offense from Reagan Stevens and Tori Richman, who combined for 10 kills and just one error.
