KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Point Park University softball bounced back in a big way with an 8-7 victory over No. 25-ranked Webber International (Fla.) on Saturday. The victory earned the Pioneers (1-1) a split on their opening day at The Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
It was a very tough schedule for the Pioneers, who faced two ranked teams in one day. Point Park started out with a 20-0 loss to No. 19 Warner (Fla.), but they recovered to post the big win.
Point Park got out to an 8-1 lead thanks to some big hitting. That was highlighted by Jodi Frontino's three-run homer in the third inning.
Point Park's scoring started with RBI hits from Carissa Scekeres and Maddie Horn to take a 2-1 lead in the second. The lead increased to 8-1 in the fourth when Taylor Goldstrohm knocked in a run with a double and Jada Simon helped her own cause with a two-run single.
Simon pitched all 7.0 innings and held on for the win. Down 8-4 heading into its final at bat, Webber International did get three runs in the last of the seventh, but Simon was able to work around two errors and get the final batter to pop up to second base. That stranded the tying run at third.
Simon gave up just three earned runs. She struck out one and walked one. Point Park had nine hits as a team with Horn and Golstrohm both going 2 for 4.
Point Park has another tough matchup on Sunday with a doubleheader versus another ranked team from Florida. The Pioneers play Ave Maria (Fla.), which is "receiving votes" nationally, at 2 p.m.
