From River States Conference

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- Point Park University center back Marco Monteiro has been named the River States Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts April 5-11.

Monteiro, a defender from Vila Boa, Portugal, spearheaded the Point Park defense in a 2-1 playoff win over IU East in the quarterfinals last Thursday. The center back was the main point of defense for the Pioneers, who built a 2-0 lead and nearly pitched a shutout before a goal in the 85th minute.

Monteiro's main assignment was neutralizing IU East center forward Trevor Lenke, a 6-3 senior who had scored four goals in the previous game to get the Red Wolves into the playoffs. Monteiro shut off the point of attack to key the victory and push the Pioneers into the RSC semifinals on Tuesday night at Rio Grande (Ohio) (6 p.m.).
