Box Score PITTSBURGH -- In a key matchup with both teams trying to stay in first place in the River States Conference, WVU Tech edged Point Park University men's soccer, 1-0, on Thursday night from Highmark Stadium.
WVU Tech (10-2-3, 5-0-1 RSC) got a goal in the first half, and it stood up as the game-winner as the Golden Bears reached the 10-win mark overall and remained unbeaten in the RSC.
Point Park had been in the RSC points lead entering the game, but the Pioneers fell to 6-7-3 overall, 4-1-2 RSC after being dealt their first conference defeat. With Thursday's results, which included an 8-0 win for Rio Grande (5-0-1 RSC) at Carlow, WVU Tech and Rio Grande are tied for the top spot in the RSC standings.
WVU Tech took a 1-0 lead on Emanuele Bossi's goal in the 37th minute. Center back Enrique Lopez won a ball in the WVU Tech defensive half and quickly pushed it across the midfield line. He threaded a pass up ahead to Bossi, who was streaking down a crack in the Point Park defense. Bossi finished for the goal as the Golden Bears were able to quickly combine for the game's only goal.
From there, both teams had chances, but the game remained a one-goal margin. The Golden Bears missed on multiple occassions to extend the lead, but they had many shots go off target. Point Park goalkeeper Max Davila also did his work to keep WVU Tech limited as he made four saves in each half.
WVU Tech's 18-7 advantage in shots included nine shots in each half. Point Park had just three of its shots go on target with Lucas Rivera Paramio making all three stops for the shutout. The Golden Bears had their center backs Lopez and Julian Diaz keep control of things as that duo squashed out anything the Pioneers had going.
Point Park moves ahead to the Senior Day matchup versus NAIA No. 22-ranked Rio Grande (Ohio) on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. at Highmark Stadium. The senior recognition will take place at the conclusion of the women's game directly before. It is the next to last game of the regular season for Point Park, which is pushing for one of the top seeds in the RSC playoffs. The top six teams qualify with the top two receiving a bye into th semifinals.
