Box Score 2 NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- Point Park University softball scored five runs in the top of the seventh to win Game 2 at IU Southeast, 6-4, on Saturday and earn a River States Conference doubleheader split. The Grenadiers won the opener, 7-4, but the Pioneers evened things up on the day with their late rally.
Point Park is now 18-16 overall, 9-9 RSC after the two games. IU Southeast moves to 18-23 and 12-10 RSC. The Pioneers continue their road trip Sunday at Brescia (Ky.) for an 11 am CT doubleheader.
IU SOUTHEAST 7, POINT PARK 4
It was early offense for both teams as the score was 5-4 in favor of IU Southeast after one complete inning. Both teams put up double-digit hits for the game with Point Park getting 10 and IU Southeast 13.
But after the first-inning of flurry of runs, there were just a couple of insurance runs for the Grenadiers from that point on.
Point Park had four runs on four hits in the top of the first. Sydnie Reese got the scoring started with a two-run double. Alex Bondi and Jodi Frontino followed with RBI singles, and they both had a pair of hits in the game. Hailey Leitner was also 2 for 3.
IU Southeast got its five runs on seven hits in the bottom half. IU Southeast had another run in the second and bumped the lead to 7-4 in the fifth. The Grenadiers took advantage of four Point Park errors along the way.
Point Park pitcher Angalee Beall went all 6.0 innings giving up four earned runs for the seven charged to her. Brooklyn Gibbs got the complete-game win for IU Southeast survivin 10 hits and three walks and striking out three.
POINT PARK 6, IU SOUTHEAST 4
The Pioneers trailed 4-1 with one on and two out in the top of the seventh. That's when Point Park mounted a major rally with five hits and five runs to storm ahead, 6-4.
Alex Bondi kept the inning going with a two-out single. Melanie Taylor followed with an RBI double to make the score 4-2. Jada Simon came up next with a two-run double to tie the game.
Another single by Cristina Sargent kept the rally going. With two runners on, Jodi Frontino delivered yet another big hit this year with a two-run double for a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom half, IU Southeast got a double and a walk to put the tying runs on base with two outs. But Simon finished out her complete game with a flyout to end it. Simon went all 7.0 innings giving up six hits and limiting the Grenadiers to four runs with four walks and four strikeouts.
Taylor and Frontino were both 2 for 4 with a double. Sargent was also 2 for 4 as part of the Pioneers' 13-hit attack.
IU Southeast had just six hits but made the most of them. The hits were big ones to produce the 4-1 lead with all of the runs coming with two outs. First there was Lindsey Nelson's two-run single in the first. Then there was Katie Cook's RBI double in the third for a 3-0 lead.
After Point Park had cut the score to 3-1, Macie Zink came through with an RBI single with two outs in the fifth to push the score to 4-1.
But Simon kept things right there until the offense could come around later. Gabby Mahoney pitched the first 6.2 innings for IU Southeast, and she got all but the final out of the game.
She worked around 12 hits and three walks to take a 4-1 lead until the seventh. But the Pioneers got four hits off of her in the seventh before Meghan Waggoner came in with the score tied at 4-4. She gave up the double to Frontino.
