Pioneers fall to (RV) Midway in RSC test

Box Score

PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University women's basketball had turnovers prove costly in a 72-46 loss to (RV) Midway (Ky.) University on Thursday night. The River States Conference matchup took place at CCAC-Allegheny.

Point Park (4-10, 1-5 RSC) overcome a tough start to get within a point of the Eagles (10-6, 5-1 RSC) in the later stages of the second quarter. But turnovers bit the Pioneers again as they were looking at a 29-21 deficit at the half.

Midway, which is "receiving votes" nationally toward the NAIA Top 25 Poll, had a hot second half on top of that shooting over 50 percent the final two quarters. Combined with Point Park's 32 turnovers on the night, it was too much to overcome for the Pioneers.

Emma Pavelek scored 14 points, and Ari Bleda added 10 points and nine rebounds for Point Park. Taylor Rinn totaled six points and 10 boards as the Pioneers held the advantage on the glass, 39-32.

Point Park faced early deficits of 8-0 and 10-2. That did not deter the Pioneers, who got back into the game trailing 15-11 at the end of the first quarter. A free throw by Pavelek pulled Point Park within 20-19 at the 4:49 mark of the second quarter. The Eagles had their eight-point halftime lead with the Pioneers suffering 18 turnovers the opening half.

Midway was 16 for 30 from the field the second half. That made it hard for the Pioneers to catch up, and the deficit was 50-35 after three quarters. A lot of points came off turnovers with Midway getting 32 of those on the night.

Midway's offense had 18 points apiece from Dezeree White and Semaji Adams. Jalyn Jackson added 10 points and a couple of 3-pointers.

Point Park has a chance to get right back into action Friday night at home versus IU Southeast. Game time is 5:00 p.m. at CCAC-Allegheny for another RSC matchup of teams from opposite divisions.
