SALEM, W.Va. – The Point Park women's basketball team survived a late comeback by Salem University to pick up their fifth win of the season with a 67-63 non-conference win over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
In a game that came down to the wire, the Pioneers pulled off the win on 42.4 percent shooting from the floor and 78.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line. From the floor Point Park knocked down 25 of their 59 attempts and went 11 for 14 from the charity stripe.
With a second left in the matchup,
Alexis Giles went perfect at the line after being fouled by Kori Pillette to put Point Park up for good. On the night Giles went 3 for 3 from the free throw line. Coming into the matchup Giles was shooting nearly 70 percent at the line.
Emma Pavelek led the Point Park offense picking up 16 points on 5 for 14 from the field. Pavelek knocked down three from deep and went a perfect 3 for 3 from the free throw line.
Three other players reached double-digits with
Ari Bleda (15),
Camille Fultz (13), and Giles (10) being the main factors for the Pioneers offense.
Camille Fultz nearly missed a double-double grabbing nine boards to led Point Park. Bleda contributed on the defensive end picking up four steals and a block.
For the Tigers, Cassandra Smith led all scorers with 18 points going 6 for 16 from the floor and 5 for 5 from the free throw line. Salem had three other players score in double-digits with Liliani Krause (17), Taja Stephens (14), and Carmen Vasquez (10) all contributing to the tough loss.
Salem controlled the glass outrebounding Point Park 41-34 with the Tigers pulling down 15 offensive rebounds and 26 defensive rebounds.
With the win, Point Park moves to 5-12 on the season with the non-conference win over the Tigers in their first matchup of the season. Point Park will return home for a huge matchup against Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, January 29. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at CCAC-Allegheny.
