PITTSBURGH – After an impressive first season competing in the Mountain East Conference last winter, the Point Park men's and women's indoor track & field teams will open the 2025-26 campaign at the Youngtown State Icebreaker on Friday at the Watson and Tressel Training Facility.
Point Park is coming off a pair of top five finishes at last season's MEC Indoor Championships, with the women placing second and the men taking fourth at the event. The Pioneers won three individual championships at last year's championship, including
Akeem Mustapha in the high jump and long jump, and
Emma Pavelek in the high jump.
Point Park also had four runner-up finishes at the event, including
Cassondra O'Connor in the 5000m,
Kamar Sutherland in the 60m hurdles,
Dunya Van den Tooren in the high jump, and
Diamond Rush in the 400m. In addition, the Pioneers had five more podium finishes with third-place honorees in the DMR (
Lotte Zethof,
Paige Marnell,
Jana Schmid,
Allison Plassio), 800m (
Jana Schmid), Pentathlon (
Dunya Van den Tooren), 200m (
Diamond Rush), and 3000m (
Cassondra O'Connor).
At last year's YSU Icebreaker event, Point Park's
Mya Greschner (5.44m) set a school record in the women's 400m, while
Cassondra O'Connor set the second-fastest time in PPU history in the 5000m (17:44.86).
On the men's side, Point Park set four school record at last year's Icebreaker event, including
Luke McKenna in the 5000m (15:21.12),
Akeem Mustapha in the high jump (2.02m) and long jump (7.43m), and
Chevaughn Fletcher in the shot put (15.13m).
