MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Akeem Mustapha won the Mountain East Conference Championship in the long jump and finished runner-up in the high jump to headline day two at the MEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships for Point Park on Monday at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
Mustapha turned in a mark of 7.14m to take first place in the long jump, while his mark of 1.95m in the high jump finished second in the league. His high jump mark was also the second-best in school history.
On the track, the Point Park men were led by a runner-up finish from Jannik Windelband in the 3000m Steeplechase. The Pioneers also had three individuals qualify for Tuesday finals on the track, including Kamar Sutherland and Mustapha in the 110m hurdles, and Christian Reid in the 400m.
Sutherland turned in the top prelim time in the 110m hurdles with a school record time of 14.37.
The Point Park women were led by three school record performances on Monday, including Diamond Rush in the 400m (57.35), Lotte Zethof in the 3000m Steeplechase (11:37.68), and Dunya Van den Tooren in the heptathlon (4454). Van den Tooren finished third in the heptathlon event to earn a trip to the podium, while Zethof finished fourth in the 3000m Steeplechase.
Van den Tooren also turned in a fifth-place finish in the long jump on Monday with a mark of 5.52m – the second-best mark in PPU history.
In prelims on the track, Rush's school record time in the 400m helped her move on to the finals, where she will be joined by teammate Paige Marnell (58.39), who finished sixth in prelims in the event.
The Pioneers will also send a pair of competitors to the 800m final, including Allison Plassio with the second-best prelim time (2:16.29), and Jana Schmid with the fourth-best prelim time (2:16.93).
Additionally, Emma Roemer moved on to 100m Hurdles final, turning in a time of 15.33 to qualify during prelims on Monday.
