Point Park Opens MEC Play at Concord on Wednesday

PITTSBURGH – The Point Park men's soccer team will open non-conference play against Concord University on Wednesday afternoon at Callaghan Stadium in Athens.
 
The Pioneers enter the game with an 0-1 record after falling to Salem, 1-0, in non-conference play on Sunday afternoon. Concord enters the game with a 2-0 record with wins over Chowan (5-2) and Frostburg State (2-1) last week. Through two games, the Mountain Lions have scored seven goals this season.
 
Storylines
  • In Point Park's 1-0 setback against Salem on Sunday, the Tigers held a 13-7 shot advantage over the Pioneers, including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • Offensively, Point Park was led by Cheroky Briard on the offensive end, recording two shots (one shot on goal).
  • In the Point Park goal, Gregorio Capponi recorded three saves in the narrow 1-0 defeat.
  • A season ago, Point Park turned in a record of 6-10-1, including a 3-10-1 mark in conference play. In the two matchups between Concord and Point Park a season ago, the Mountain Lions came away with a pair of 2-1 victories. In the early season matchup at Highmark Stadium, Cheroky Briard scored an unassisted goal in the 90th minute to make the final score 2-1 late.
  • Wednesday's game is the second of three roads games to begin the season for Point Park. The Pioneers will wrap up the road stand on Sunday with a noon kickoff at Wheeling University. Point Park will open the home portion of its schedule next Wednesday (Sept. 17) against West Virginia Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.
  • Going into the 2025 season the Pioneers had 14 seniors and graduate students and 11 juniors on an experienced roster. Notably, Point Park returned Cheroky Briard, who was voted second team All-Mountain East Conference in 2024. Briard, a graduate student from Normandy, France, finished the season with two goals and two assists (6 points) a season ago.
  • The Pioneers were voted 6th in the 2025 Mountain East Conference Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, following a vote of the league's head coaches. In their first season competing in NCAA Division II and the Mountain East Conference, Point Park picked up league wins over Frostburg State, West Liberty and regional power Davis & Elkins.
