NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Point Park opened the 2025 season with a pair of 3-0 setbacks at the Hall of Fame Classic hosted by Walsh University on Friday afternoon in North Canton.
This morning, Walsh defeated Point Park by a 3-0 final (25-16, 25-12, 25-13), before Lake Erie was victorious in PPU's second match with a straight-set victory of 25-19, 25-16, and 25-21.
This morning against Walsh, Point Park was led by nine kills from
Avery Budrys Rini and five kills from
Patricia Calero-Irizarry.
Alex Koontz also chipped in four kills, six digs and one ace.
Marianna Oyola-Rivera passed out 16 assists from her setter position.
Walsh hit .400 in the win with 43 kills compared to nine errors. The hosts also held an 8-2 advantage in blocks. Point Park hit .090 in the match with 26 kills and 18 errors.
In the early afternoon against Lake Erie, Budrys Rini once against led the Pioneers with nine kills, while
Nicole Reasbeck drove home eight kills. Koontz finished the match with five kills and four digs. Oyola-Rivera recorded a team-high in assists (25), digs (6) and blocks (2) against Lake Erie.
Mia Arndt also chipped in defensively with five digs from her libero position.
Lake Erie held key statistical advantage in hitting (.321), blocks (8-3) and aces (7-1). Point Park hit .149 against the Storm, recording 34 kills compared to 20 errors.
Point Park wraps up play at the Hall of Fame Classic on Saturday morning against Saginaw Valley State. First serve is slated for 9 a.m.
