CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a game that featured just seven total hits and 12 different pitchers between the two teams, Point Park outlasted Bluefield State for a 2-1 win on Friday afternoon at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, West Virginia.
With the win, Point Park improves to 9-6 on the season. Bluefield falls to 6-11.
Bluefield State plated the first run of the game in the top of the fifth with a double by Adriel Martinez to bring home Blake Mckinney from second. Mckinney walked and stole second earlier in the inning to get into scoring position.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Joshua Cardoso was walked to lead off the inning, then advanced to second on a groundout by
Felix Rodriguez to get into scoring position.
Trevor Jones singled during the next out bat to allow Cardoso to turn third and head for home to tie the game.
With Jones on first,
Olindo Pezzone doubled to put Point Park in position to take the lead with runners at second and third. A bulk during
Blake Ewing's at-bat moved Pezzone to third and sent Jones home for what would become the game-clinching run.
Point Park finished with four hits on the afternoon, including doubles by
Chris Williams and Pezzone.
The Pioneers went deep into their bullpen in the game, with seven pitchers seeing action.
Manny Garcia (2-1) pitched the seventh to earn the win, while
Carter Raper notched his second save of the season in the ninth.
Point Park will head to Glenville State on Saturday for an MEC twinbill. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
