WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Point Park and Saint Michael's College split a twinbill on Saturday morning and afternoon at Chains of Lake Park in Winter Haven.
The Pioneers were strong at the plate in game one, running away with an 18-3 win in the early game. Later in the afternoon, Saint Michael's outlasted Point Park with a 5-4 win in extra innings. It was Point Park's fourth extra-inning game of the season.
Game 1
In the first two innings of game one, Point Park jumped ahead 10-0 on Saturday morning. In the first,
Trevor Jones and
Felix Rodriguez hit RBI singles to make it 2-0, before
Olindo Pezzone came to the plate and brought them both home with a three-run home run, making it 5-0.
In the second with the bases loaded, Pezzone hit a grand slam to make it 9-0. He scored Rodriguez,
Luis Gonzalez and
Carlos de la Vega on the grand slam. Later in the second inning,
Felix Gonzalez hit and RBI double to put double-digits on the scoreboard after two innings (10-0).
In all, Pezzone finished the game going 5-for-5 with five runs scores and 11 runs batted-in, In the game he hit four home runs and a double.
Blake Ewing also had a big game, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs.
On the hill,
Camden Dimidjian picked up the win, allowing just three runs on four hits while striking out five.
Game 2
In game two, Saint Michael's took an early lead with a one-run first inning.
In the bottom of the first,
Felix Rodriguez came to the plate with the bases loaded and crushed a grand slam to make it 4-1 early.
In the second, SMC's Jack Pattison hit a two-run homer, making it a one-run game at 4-3. Two innings later in the fourth, Saint Michael's scored on an RBI single by Sam Cavossa that brought home Luke McGuire.
The 4-4 deadlock remained into the eighth inning, when Luke McGuire hit an RBI single to give Saint Michael's the lead for good at 5-4.
Point Park returns to the field on Sunday to take on Minnesota Crookston. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. from Chains of Lake Park in Winter Haven.
