CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio – Freshman Brittany Zeigler hit two home runs, and pitcher Ashley Iagnemma tossed a two-hitter in Point Park University softball's sweep of Ohio Christian University Wednesday, winning game one, 6-0, and game two, 4-1.
Iagnemma (5-7), a freshman from Bridgeville, Pa. and South Fayette HS, tossed a two-hitter and recorded nine strikeouts en route to the Pioneers' (12-16, 6-4 KIAC) 6-0 victory in game one.
Point Park scored three runs in the top of the third when Erica Burns reached on an error. Senior Taylor Geary and Zeigler singled to load the bases, and Burns scored when the Trailblazers (9-23, 3-9 KIAC) got Kim Corcoran out at first. With two outs, an error by the first baseman allowed Geary and Zeigler to score, putting Point Park up 3-0.
In the top of the fifth, Burns walked and was out at second when Geary reached on a fielder's choice. Zeigler, a native of McDonald, Pa. and West Allegheny HS, stepped to the plate and hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Trailblazers committed two errors in the top of the seventh to allow the final Point Park run to score.
In game two, the Pioneers put a run on the board in the first inning when Burns singled and Geary put down a bunt to advance her to second. Geary and Burns advanced on a fielder's choice, and Burns scored on a passed ball to make the score 1-0.
Burns and Geary doubled back to back in the top of the fifth, and Zeigler hit another two-run home run to put the Pioneers up 4-0.
Ohio Christian put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth. A walk, a single and a deep fly ball to right field with two outs made the score 4-1.
Senior pitcher Hannah Harley (6-7) allowed one run on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts for the win.
The Pioneers host Midway College April 15 for a 4 p.m. KIAC doubleheader at Fairhaven Park.
