CLERMONT, Fla. – Point Park University softball scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to an 11-4 win over Middle Georgia State University Saturday morning in Clermont, Fla.
Point Park (3-1) senior shortstop Becca Babincak (SR/Gibsonia, Pa) went 4-for-5 and scored three runs.
Kim Corcoran (JR/Cheswick, Pa), Jess Beitler and Brittany Zeigler (SO/McDonald, Pa) each went 2-for-3 with a double apiece. Beitler racked up four RBIs and Corcoran had two.
Pitcher Ashley Iagnemma (SO/Bridgeville, Pa) (2-0) tossed a complete game and posted her first double-digit strikeout game of the season with 10. She allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits and walked two.
Middle Georgia State scored all of its runs in the third inning off a few costly errors and a two-run home run by Sabrina Doucette.
Point Park bested St. Thomas (Fla.) University, 5-4, in the second game of the day.
Corcoran went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Babincak hit 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
It was a back and forth game until the fifth when St. Thomas pulled ahead, 4-3.
The Pioneers put together a string of base hits in the seventh to score two runs and pull out the win. Corcoran hit an RBI single, and Beitler reached on an error by the first baseman resulting in another run and the final score of 5-4.
Sophomore transfer Tiffany Edwards (SO/Deer Lakes, Pa.) got the start on the mound for the Pioneers, allowing four runs on three hits in four innings of work. Katie Tarr (FR/Burgettstown, Pa.) came away with the win, allowing only one hit and striking out four.
The Pioneers face the University of Michigan Dearborn and Wheeling Jesuit University tomorrow at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
