CLERMONT, Fla. – Point Park University softball struggled at the plate, losing two games in Clermont, Fla. Sunday.
The Pioneers (3-3) fell to the University of Michigan Dearborn, 6-2, in the first game of the day.
Point Park's only runs came in the bottom of the second inning.
Alyssa McMurtrie reached on a walk, and a sac bunt by Shannon Davis moved her to second. Brittany Zeigler was hit by a pitch to reach first. With runners on first and second, Amber Cook reached on a fielder's choice. Zeigler was forced out at second, but McMurtrie turned the corner at third and made it home on a throwing error by the shortstop.
On the next play, Chelsea Rogel hit a single to score Cook, making the score 2-0. Becca Babincak hit a single and Lily Pruneda walked to load the bases, but the Pioneers could not keep the momentum going and a pop-up ended the inning.
Ashley Iagnemma (2-1) took the loss on the mound for the Pioneers, giving up four runs on five hits, striking out four and walking four. Katie Tarr pitched three innings of relief, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out two and walking two.
Wheeling Jesuit University topped the Pioneers, 4-0, in the nightcap.
Sophomore pitcher Tiffany Edwards went the distance for Point Park, allowing four runs on four hits, striking out three and walking three.
Babincak went 2-for-4 at the plate, and Shannon Davis was 2-for-3, but the Pioneers could not get a run on the board. They left eight runners stranded on base.
Tomorrow Point Park faces NAIA opponent Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University at 9 a.m. and NCAA DII Gannon University at 2 p.m.
