CLERMONT, Fla. – Point Park University softball split games in Clermont, Fla. Monday, beating NAIA opponent Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University, 5-3, and losing to NCAA DII Gannon University, 3-1.

The day started off with a win for the Pioneers (4-4), who remain at .500 after four days at the Spring Games.

Ashley Iagnemma (SO/Bridgeville, Pa) (3-1) got the start on the mound for the Pioneers, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out eight and walking one.

The Point Park offense kept up its end of the deal, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first off a double by Shannon Davis (SO/West Mifflin, Pa).

In the bottom of the second, a double by senior Alyssa McMurtrie (SR/Coraopolis, Pa), an error in the next at-bat and a wild pitch led her to score. A sacrifice by Chelsea Rogel (SO/New Wilmington, Pa) brought home Amber Cook (FR/West Mifflin, Pa.) to make the score 4-1 before the inning ended.

Mount Vernon Nazarene (0-1) added two runs to close the gap to 4-3 in the top of the fifth, but a walk, a single and a deep sac fly by Jess Beitler added an insurance run for the Pioneers.

A hard fought battle ended in a 3-1 loss for Point Park in the nightcap against Gannon (3-1).

Becca Babincak (SR/Gibsonia, Pa) was 2-for-4, Shannon Davis was 2-for-3 and McMurtrie hit in a run, but it wasn't enough to lift the Pioneers past the Golden Knights.

Tiffany Edwards (SO/Deer Lakes, Pa.) (0-2) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Katie Tarr (FR/Burgettstown, Pa.) struck out one in relief.

Point Park faces the Milwaukee School of Engineering and meets Mount Vernon Nazarene again on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
