CLERMONT, Fla. – Point Park University softball beat Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University, 1-0, in extra innings and lost, 5-2, to the Milwaukee School of Engineering Wednesday at the Spring Games in Florida.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers (5-5) and MVNU (1-4) were locked in a defensive battle for seven innings.

Tiffany Edwards (SO/Deer Lakes, Pa.) (1-2) went the distance for Point Park, scattering four hits over eight innings, walking one and striking out two.

The Pioneers scored the lone run in the bottom of the eighth.

With one out, Brittany Zeigler (SO/McDonald, Pa) stood on second as the international tie-breaker rule was in effect. Becca Babincak (SR/Gibsonia, Pa) moved her to third with a single, and Lily Pruneda (JR/Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) hit the game-winning RBI single to bring Zeigler home.

Point Park lost to the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 5-2, earlier that morning.

Katie Tarr (FR/Burgettstown, Pa.) (1-2) got her first collegiate start on the mound, allowing five runs (one earned), walking one and striking out three over five innings of work. Ashley Iagnemma (SO/Bridgeville, Pa) added two innings of relief, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out two.

The Pioneers got on the board first when Babincak reached on an error. Pruneda followed with a single, and Alyssa McMurtrie (SR/Coraopolis, Pa) hit a sac fly to center field to bring Babincak home.

However, the Raiders capitalized on a few costly Point Park errors in the bottom of the inning, making the score 3-1 heading into the second.

MSOE would score two more runs in the bottom of the second and third to put them up 5-1.

Kim Corcoran (JR/Cheswick, Pa) hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh, but it was too little too late for the Pioneers.

Babincak was 2-for-4 and scored two runs, Pruneda went 2-for-4 and McMurtrie was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Pioneers face Calumet (Ind.) College at 9 a.m. and Cleary (Mich.) University at 11:30 a.m. today.
