PITTSBURGH – Point Park University softball eked out a pair of wins over Ohio Christian University in a River States Conference doubleheader Sunday, 4-2 and 1-0.
The Pioneers (17-12, 8-2 RSC) defeated the Trailblazers (4-24, 1-9 RSC), 4-2, in game one.
Ashley Iagnemma (SO/Bridgeville, Pa) picked up the win and reached her 100th strikeout of the season in the first inning after picking up two strikeouts.
She pitched five innings, allowing only two hits, walking four and striking out six.
Freshman Katie Tarr (FR/Burgettstown, Pa.) pitched two innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits and walking one.
The Pioneers added three runs in the bottom of the fourth when Kim Corcoran (JR/Cheswick, Pa) walked and Jess Beitler singled. Amber Cook (FR/West Mifflin, Pa.) hit a sacrifice bunt to move them over to second and third, and Shannon Davis (SO/West Mifflin, Pa) brought them home with a two-run double.
With two outs, Delaney Baumis (SO/New Castle, Pa) stepped to the plate and hit a triple to bring in Davis.
Point Park scored a run in the bottom of the fifth. With runners at first and second, Beitler hit an RBI double to make the score 4-0 before Ohio Christian scored its two runs in the top of the sixth.
The Pioneers could not get their bats moving in the nightcap, winning 1-0.
Tiffany Edwards (SO/Deer Lakes, Pa.) got the win on the mound, pitching six innings and striking out one. Edwards and the Point Park defense kept the Trailblazers from scoring, even though they out-hit the Pioneers, 6-5.
Iagnemma pitched the final inning, striking out the side to end the game.
Point Park's lone run came in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Lily Pruneda (JR/Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) hit a single to right and advanced to second. Corcoran singled to bring her home.
The Pioneers travel to Malone University April 11 for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
