Box Score VIENNA, W. Va. --- The Point Park University softball team battled its way through the loser's bracket of the 2018 River States Conference Softball Tournament to be one of the final three teams left standing, but came up short against Midway (Ky.) University today, 8-7, in eight innings.
All weekend the games have been postponed or delayed because of rain, and today was no exception. Originally slated as a noon game, the teams did not get started until 5 p.m.
The Pioneers (17-22, 11-7 RSC) took the lead, 3-1, in the first inning over the Eagles (23-20, 11-7 RSC).
Midway cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third, but Point Park got that run back in the top of the fourth.
Alyssa McMurtrie hit a one-out single to right field, and Courtney Blocher moved her over to second with a sacrifice bunt.
Maddie Horn singled to put runners on the corners, and Lily Pruneda singled to score McMurtrie and put the Pioneers up, 4-2.
Point Park scored three more runs in the top of the fifth.
Jess Beitler singled up the middle, and Bailey Myers came in to pinch run for her.
Brittany Zeigler hit a one-out singled down the left field line and advanced to second on the throw, putting runners on second and third for Point Park.
Shannon Davis doubled down the left field line to score Myers, but Zeigler was thrown out trying to stretch the play at home.
McMurtrie singled down the right field line to score Davis, and advanced to second on a bobble by the right fielder, putting the Pioneers ahead, 6-2.
Midway made a pitching change, but Blocher hit a two-out single to center to score McMurtrie from second.
The Pioneers' 7-2 lead did not last long, as the Eagles cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth.
An error and back to back singles scored a run for Midway, and a walk loaded the bases.
Point Park picked up the force out at home, but another single scored another run for the Eagles, cutting the lead to 7-4.

Barely hanging on to the 7-6 lead, Point Park looked to put more runs on the board in the top of the sixth, but were stopped short by Midway.
The Eagles gained another run in the bottom of the sixth off a lead-off double, a walk and a two-out single to tie the game, 7-7.
Both Point Park and Midway went down in order in the seventh, forcing the game into extra innings.
The Eagles' defense made two incredible diving plays in a row to rob the Pioneers of base runners in the top of the eighth.
Amber Cook reached on a walk, and Beitler singled up the middle, but Midway shut down the rally with a groundout in the next at bat.
A one-out walk and a single put runners on first and second for Midway in the bottom of the eighth, and Katelynn Mogelberg-Kauffman hit the walk-off single down the left field line that caused Horn to bobble the ball and the winning run to score.
Pruneda was 3 for 5 with an RBI, McMurtrie was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Beitler was 3 for 4 on the day.
The Pioneers out-hit the Eagles, 15-11, and only half of Midway's runs were earned.
Katie Tarr started the game on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out seven in four innings of work.
Tiffany Edwards suffered the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits, walking three and striking out five in 3.1 innings.
The Pioneers end their season 17-22 after an impressive battle against the weather and tough opponents through the loser's bracket to become one of the final three teams left standing in the tournament.
Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow's RSC Tournament championship game, both Midway and Rio Grande will earn bids to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round May 14-16 at campus sites.
