Pioneers rally past MVNU, fall to Warner on Day 4 in Florida

Box Score

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Point Park University softball registered a big win with a rally past Mt. Vernon Nazarene, 3-2, on Wednesday at The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. It was the first game of a split doubleheader for the Pioneers, which included a 9-3 loss to Warner (Fla.) in a night game.

The Pioneers (2-6) were trailing Mt. Vernon Nazarene, 2-1, when they came to bat in the top of the sixth. But Point Park got a rally started with Amber Cook's base hit. Tiffany Edwards followed with another walk, and with two outs, Delaney Baumis drew a walk to load the bases. That's when Shannon Davis delivered a two-run single for the eventual winning runs.

Point Park starting pitcher Ashley Iagnemma then retired the Cougars' hitters in order in the sixth and seventh innings to finish off the victory. Iagnemma went the distance striking out seven and walking none.

Iagnemma gave up six hits, which included Mackenzie Huey's lead-off homer in the second. MVNU put together three hits in the third to produce a run and a 2-1 lead. But Iagnemma kept things there until the bats came around.

Maddie Horn was 2 for 4 with a triple for the Pioneers. She lead off the third with her triple. Horn later scored on an two-out double by Cook, who was also 2 for 4.

The second game of the doubleheader had the Pioneers jump out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the second inning. Delaney Baumis ripped an RBI double to open the scoring. Horn delivered a two-out, two-run double later in the frame.

But then Warner got its offense going with 12 hits the rest of the way. And the Royals got the help of some Point Park errors, which made six of the nine runs unearned. Tiffany Edwards started for the Pioneers and pitched 5.0 innings with Katie Tarr tossing the final 2.0.

The Pioneers conclude their trip to Florida on Thursday versus Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) at 2:15 and against the Czech Republic National Team for an exhibition game at 4:30 p.m.
