Box Score KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Point Park University softball had another tough slate on Sunday, their second day at The Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Pioneers fell in both ends of a doubleheader to (RV) Ave Maria (Fla.), 10-2 and 9-1.
Ave Maria (4-0), which is "receiving votes" in the NAIA Top 25, broke open a close game in both ends of the doubleheader. The Gyrenes did so with a couple of big innings to enact the 8-run mercy rule each time.
For Point Park (1-3) it was the second day in a row that they played two games versus teams mentioned in the Top 25. They opened up on Saturday with a split versus No. 19 Warner (Fla.) and No. 25 Webber International (Fla.).
The first game was tied at 2-2 after Point Park's Sydnie Reese went deep for a two-run homer. The Pioneers were still hanging in down 3-2 before Ave Maria broke the game open with five runs in the fourth. The Gyrenes put together four hits and had the help of two errors to make the score 8-2.
There was another costly Point Park error in the fifth, and when combined with three hits in the frame, it was a 10-2 deficit.
Point Park's Angalee Beall got the start. She went all 5.0 innings although only five of the 10 runs she gave up were earned. Sarah Shepard got the win for Ave Maria on a one-hitter through 5.0 innings. She let an errorless defense work behind her with four strikeouts and two walks on the day.
Point Park was ahead, 1-0, in the second game. That came in the first inning when Taylor Goldstrohm singled, moved to second on an error to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball.
Ave Maria strung together five hits in the second to put up four runs. Leading 5-1 when they came to bat in the bottom of the fifth, the Gyrenes ended the game with another four runs right there.
Jada Simon pitched all 4.2 innings for Point Park. She was saddled with six earned runs on the day. Goldstrohm led the Pioneers' offense going 2 for 2.
Point Park has a full week of games coming up before its trip is through. Next up is Monday versus Bethel (Ind.) at 12:15 p.m. and versus Spring Arbor (Mich.) at 2:30 p.m.
