KENNEDY TWP., Pa. -- Point Park University softball won both games of its River States Conference doublheader versus Brescia (Ky.) University on Friday. The Pioneers won the opener, 8-3, and they made it five wins in their last six games with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.
The doubleheader sweep evened Point Park's record at 11-11 overall and improved the Pioneers to 5-3 RSC. Point Park plays two more RSC games at home on Saturday, April 10 with a twinbill versus conference newcomer Oakland City (Ind.) at 1 p.m.
POINT PARK 8, BRESCIA 3
The Pioneers tallied 12 hits and steadily added to the scoreboard with runs in four of the six innings they came to bat. Jodi Frontino's solo homer in the third was the second running of that inning, and it gave the Pioneers the lead for good at 3-2.
Taylor Goldstrohm was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Registering two hits apiece were Angalee Beall, Hailey Leitner, Michaela Koch and Carissa Scekeres. Scekeres drove in two runs, and Koch drove in one.
Beall worked the first 5.0 innings in the circle and got the victory. She handed a 5-3 lead over to Courtney Shoemake, who pitched 2.0 innings of scoreless and hitless ball to get the save. An error to start the seventh was the only batter to reach versus Shoemake.
POINT PARK 2, BRESCIA 0
Jada Simon put together he second pitching gem in as many starts to make it a sweep. Simon tossed a two-hitter over 7.0 innings for the shutout. She struck out six and walked none to keep the bases clear.
Simon cruised along retiring the Bearcats in order in five of the seven innings. She set down the last 10 batters in a row after giving up a double with two outs in the fourth.
The Pioneers needed only four hits in support of Simon. One of those was Sydnie Reese's solo homer in the fifth to make it 2-0.
Point Park broke the scoreless tie in the fourth by manufacturing a run. Maddie Horn singled, moved to second on Jodi Frontino's bunt, went to third on a groundout and scored on an infield error.
