Point Park softball drops two at Asbury (Ky.) to open RSC play

WILMORE, Ky. -- Point Park University softball absorbed two losses at Asbury (Ky.) University to open up River States Conference play on Friday. Asbury won both ends of the doubleheader, 5-2 and 14-6.

Point Park (6-10, 0-2 RSC) stays in Kentucky for two more RSC games on Saturday at Midway (Ky.) University. First pitch is 1 p.m. in Midway, Ky.

Here are recaps of Friday's games:

ASBURY 5, POINT PARK 2
Point Park had a 2-0 lead after three innings, but Asbury had the late offense with two in the fifth to tie and three in the sixth to win. The Pioneers brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh after two-out singles by Maddie Horn and Angalee Beall, but Asbury's Ally Moore finished off her complete game for the win.

Taylor Goldstrohm was 3 for 4 and scored both of Point Park's runs. In the top of the first, she singled, stole second and scored on Horn's base hit. Horn was 2 for 4. In the third, Goldstrohm singled, stole second for another of her three swipes and came home with groundouts by Horn and Beall.

Asbury's Madison Moss came up with a big, two-run single to tie in the fifth. An inning later, the Eagles strung together four hits, including Abby Fletcher's two-run single and Harley Wagoner's RBI double.

Beall pitched all 6.0 innings for Point Park giving up six hits. She struck out two and walked two.

ASBURY 14, POINT PARK 6
The Eagles got out to an early lead and kept it to take the nightcap. Asbury staked a 5-0 lead with five runs in the second inning. Point Park answered right back with four in the top of the third, but Asbury put up another six runs in the fourth to stretch it out again.

Jodi Frontino was 2 for 3 with a double and drove in four runs for Point Park. Her three-run double highlighted the rally in the third. Alex Bondi, who was 1 for 2 and drove in two, followed with an RBI single.

Frontino's RBI single and Bondi's sacrifice fly got the Pioneers within 11-5 in the fifth.

Asbury collected 12 hits compared to six for Point Park. The game ended on the 8-run rule when Asbury scored three in the sixth. Taylor Enlow (4.1 IP) and Abby Ponder (1.2 IP) covered the 6.0 innings for Asbury. Jada Simon was saddled with the loss throwing 5.0 innings.
