Box Score PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University volleyball had a dominating performance in a 3-0 win over Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Pioneers improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 River States Conference with the victory of 25-14, 25-10, 25-13.
The Pioneers got everyone involved and took care of business versus the Eagles to finish off the first week of RSC play with three wins in three matches. With a win at Carlow to start the RSC schedule earlier in the week and a workmanlike sweep of WVU Tech just the night before, Point Park welcomed Alice Lloyd back into the volleyball conference with a victory in straight sets.
Point Park had a big advantage on the attack with 45 kills compared to just 18 for Alice Lloyd. The Pioneers hit .379 for the match and were above .400 for each of the first two sets. Point Park had 15 kills and four errors in the opening set and 14 kills and just two errors in the second. They closed things out with 16 kills in the third.
Seven different players had a kill led by Madison Sima, who had 11 and a .427 percentage. She had 33 kills on the week and leads the team in kills and hitting percentage so far in conference play.
Amanda Contois had a near perfect hitting match with eight kills and no errors in 11 attempts for a .727 clip. Melissa Schroecer also had eight kills compared to just one error for a .583 rate. Stephanie Rivera-Pacheo was another leader with eight kills of her own.
For the second match of the weekend, Point Park managed to have three setters in double digits for assists. Star Lakin had 14, Ashlynn Gulakowski 13 and Elise Wallace 10. The back row was a group effort with 13 of the 15 players who saw action in the match getting at least one dig. Net defense had Schroeder with four blocks and Kassandra Tejeda with three as the middle hitters.
Point Park will step out of conference play to face another NCAA Division II school when it hosts Slippery Rock on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Match time is 7:00 p.m. in the Student Center Gym.
