PITTSBURGH – Point Park recovered from a slow start to come away with a 2-1 Mountain East Conference victory over Wheeling at a rainy Highmark Stadium on Sunday evening.
Edouard Gagnon scored the unassisted game-winning goal in the 57
th minute to give the Pioneers the come-from-behind win.
Wheeling scored just 48 seconds into the game on an unassisted goal by Ruesca Martinez. Late in the first half, Point Park evened the score on a goal by
Lorenzo Grispello. Grispello's second goal of the season was assisted by
Fridolin Gefrorer in the 38
th minute.
Gagnon's second-half, game-winner was his first point of the season, as Point Park took the 2-1 win on Sunday.
Statistically, Point Park held a 15-10 advantage in total shots, including an 8-3 edge in on-target shots. The Pioneers also had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Offensively, Grispello placed four shots on goal for Point Park, while
Joao Weber recorded two on-target shots.
Gregorio Capponi made the start in goal for the Pioneers, allowing just one goal while making two saves. After allowing a goal in the first minute, he held a clean sheet for the final 89 minutes of play.
Point Park will now hit the road for a non-conference game at Felician University on Wednesday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for noon in Rutherford, New Jersey.
