KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Point Park completed an unbeaten opening weekend with a 6-3 win over West Virginia Tech on Monday afternoon at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tennessee.
The Pioneers broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run fourth inning and led the remainder of the afternoon to improve to 3-0 on the season. West Virginia Tech fell to 3-6 on the year following the defeat.
West Virginia Tech took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of an RBI double by William Gray.
Point Park tied the game in the top of the second on an RBI single by
Crixtian Taveras, then took the lead in the third on an unearned run by
Omar Morillo.
In the bottom of the third, West Virginia Tech's Hunter Fansler hit a solo home run to left field to knot the score at 2-2.
Point Park took the lead for good in the fourth when
Joseph Pilewski hit an RBI single to center field to bring home Jordan Campbell for the game-winning win run at 3-2. During the next at-bat,
Edward Mateo gave Point Park some breathing room with a two-run home run to right field - making it 5-2 in favor of the Pioneers.
West Virginia Tech added one more run in the sixth and Point Park plated an unearned run in the eighth to bring the final score to 6-3.
On the mound,
Samuel Georgiana and
Brandon Clifford split the first four innings of work, before
Orlando Leon worked the fifth through eighth innings to earn the win. All three pitchers surrendered just one run while in the game.
Leon earned the win for Point Park after recording six strikeouts in four innings of work.
Harold Boyce record the final three outs in the 6-3 win and earned the save for Point Park.
The Point Park pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts on Monday.
Point Park heads to Cary, North Carolina for three days of non-conference play at the USA Baseball Training Complex. The action gets underway on Friday at noon against Wilmington (Del.). First pitch in the twinbill is set for 12 noon.
