Point Park Splits With Wilmington To Open Play In Cary

CARY, N.C. – The Point Park baseball team split its first day of action at the NCAA Division II Round Robin hosted by Cary, North Carolina at the USA National Training Complex.

Game 1

In the first game of the day, Wilmington picked up a 3-0 shutout over the Pioneers, following a great pitching performance by ace Xavier Cortez. Wilmington's offense in game one came from a pair of home runs in the first and sixth innings.

Point Park recorded nine hits in the game, including two doubles from Crixtian Taveras, but the Pioneers stranded 10 runners in the setback.

Omar Morillo, Chris Williams, Joseph Pilewski and Taveras each recorded two hits in the game.

Despite a solid pitching performance, Javier Cardoso II suffered the loss on the hill for Point Park. He allowed three runs on five hits while striking out three. He is now 1-1 on the year.

Game 2

In game two, Point Park responded with a 9-1 win to improve to 4-1 on the young season. Taveras led the Pioneers once again at the plate, recording two more doubles and four RBIs in the late game.

With the score tied 1-1, Point Park scored two runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth to take control of the game.

Edward Mateo drove in two runs on an RBI single in the second, while Taveras hit a one-RBI double in the third and a three-RBI double in the fourth.

Jared Campbell added an RBI single in the fifth, before a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded scored the final run of the game for the Pioneers later in the inning.

Chris Williams got the scoring started for PPU in game one, hitting an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first.

Wilmington scored its only run of the game on a wild pitch.

Ramon Rodriguez improved to 2-0 on the year in game two, allowing just one run on two hits in the game as Point Park's starter. He recorded four strikeouts in five innings of work. In two starts this season, Rodriguez has allowed just three hits.
