WASHINGTON, Pa. – Point Park closed out its home-opening weekend of Mountain East Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Glenville State (7-2 and 2-1) on Sunday afternoon at Wild Things Park in Washington.
In the early game, Point Park took the lead with a three-run third inning and never looked back in the victory.
With Glenville State leading 2-1 in the middle of the third inning, Point Park took the lead in the bottom half of the frame. With
Chris Williams and
Jared Campbell aboard,
Crixtian Taveras doubled to right center to drive in both base runners and put the Pioneers in front by a 3-2 margin.
Later in the inning, Taveras stole third and turned for home following an error by the GSU catcher to make it 4-2.
Point Park would wrap up the scoring in the fifth with another three-run frame. Jared Cambell started things off with a solo home run down the left field line for a 5-2 Pioneers advantage.
Next, after Taveras and
Joseph Pilewski boarded the based,
Luis Gonzalez drive in Taveras on a groundout up the middle. Jordan Campbell also got in on the action, hitting an RBI single to center field to bring home Pilewski.
Brandon Clifford picked up the pitching decision to improve to 2-0 on the season. Clifford struck out five while allowing just two runs on five hits.
Ethan Parker pitched the seventh inning in a non-save situation and got the final three outs.
Runs were hard to come by in the second game of the day, with
Orlando Leon earning the complete-game victory for the Pioneers in the late afternoon. Leon (4-0) pitched seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven batters.
At the plate, Point Park got on the board in the bottom of the first when
Chris Williams stole third and was given home with an overthrow error by the GSU catcher.
The 1-0 lead remained until the third inning, when
Isaac Santana hit an RBI single to right field to bring home (Jared) Cambell from second.
Carlos De Jesus cut the Pioneer lead to 2-1 with an RBI double to right center for GSU.
Point Park returns to Wild Things Park on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference matchup against California (PA). First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
