Pioneers, Hilltoppers Split to Close Out Weekend Series

WASHINGTON, Pa. – After a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon, Point Park and West Liberty split on Sunday at EQT Park to close out this weekend's MEC North Division series. Point Park won game one by a 6-0 final, while West Liberty closed out the weekend with a 9-4 win.

Point Park is now 25-11 overall and 14-6 in MEC play.

Game 1

A pair of Point Park home runs in the bottom of the fifth lifted the Pioneers to a 6-0 win in game one on Sunday afternoon.

With the scoreboard still reading 0-0 in the middle of the fifth, Point Park would take control with a flurry of offense. Jordan Campbell singled early in the inning and was quickly driven home by Crixtian Taveras' two-run home run to right field – his fourth of the season.

Following Taveras' homer, Jared Campbell was walked and Isacc Santana singled through the right side to put runners on first and second. Chris Williams was also walked to load the bases, bringing Joseph Pilewski to the plate.

Pilewski homered to left field for a grand slam to make the final score 6-0. It was Pilewski's third home run of the season.

Ramon Rodriguez (3-2) pitched a shutout in game one, allowing just four hits and striking out six in six innings of work. Samuel Georgiana pitched the seventh inning for the Pioneers.

Game 2

In game two, Point Park took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The first run crossed home plate when Jordan Campbell was walked with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, Edward Mateo grounded out to first base, but positioned the hit to allow Pilewski enough time to score from third.

West Liberty responded with four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-2 advantage. However, an RBI triple by Isaac Santana and an RBI double by Chris Williams each scored a run to tie the score once again at 4-4 after three innings of play.

Over the next three innings, West Liberty plated two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to move ahead by a 9-4 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth with Point Park at-bat with one out, a turf issue on the pitcher's mound forced the game to end because of unplayable conditions for the pitchers. As a result, the game becomes a completed game with West Liberty picking up the 9-4 victory in game four of the series.

Up Next

Point Park now travels to Frostburg State next Friday and Saturday for a critical Mountain East Conference series with the Bobcats. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Friday.
