Cardoso Breaks Point Park's All-Time Wins Record in Game 1 of Friday's Sweep

FROSTBURG, Md. – Point Park took a 2-0 lead in its four-game series against Frostburg State with a doubleheader sweep of the Bobcats on Friday afternoon at Bob Wells Field in Frostburg.

The Pioneers took game one by an 8-2 advantage, before winning game two by an 11-1 final.

With the sweep, Point Park improves to 27-11 overall and 16-6 in league play. The Pioneers are now tied for the lead in the MEC North with Frostburg State, with both teams holding identical 16-6 conference marks. Fairmont State is one game behind at 11-7 in league play.

Game 1

In Point Park's 8-2 game one victory, right-handed pitcher Javier Cardoso II threw a complete game to improve to 6-3 on the season. Cardoso finished the afternoon allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two. He issued just one walk and allowed only a single earned run.

With the win, Cardoso became Point Park's all-time career leader in wins with 25. He surpassed Point Park Hall of Famer and current assistant coach Bryan Neal, who previously held the record with 24. Neal starred for the Pioneers from 1994-97.

At the plate, Point Park took a 5-0 lead in the second and never looked back. The second inning began with an RBI single from Joseph Pilewski and a sacrifice fly by Omar Morillo to put the Pioneers in front by a 2-0 margin. After Morillo's sac-fly, Crixtian Taveras hit an RBI single to left field to score Luis Gonzalez from second.

During the next at-bat, Jared Campbell was walked to load the based, setting up Isaac Santana. Already leading 3-0, Santana singled to left field to score two more runs for the Pioneers, completing the five-run second inning.

Frostburg State cut the Point Park advantage to 5-2 after scoring one run in the second and third innings, respectively.

In the sixth, Pilewski added to his RBI total with a single to left field that scored Santana for Point Park's sixth run of the game. Leading 6-2, The Pioneers plated two more runs in the seventh, the first off a Santana walk with the bases loaded, and the second on a Chris Williams hit-by-pitch that advanced all base runners with the bases loaded.

Santana and Pilewski combined to drive in five of Point Park's runs in game one.

Game 2

The Pioneer offense continued in game two, with Point Park plating 11 runs on 14 hits in the runaway 11-1 victory.

Taveras set the tone for Point Park in game two, smashing a two-run home run to right center in the top of the first. The Pioneers would then add two runs in the third, four runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two more in the seventh.

Taveras led the Pioneers in the game, hitting 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored (including his home run). Williams also went 2-for-3 in game two, while Campbell and Trevor Jones each went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game. Edward Matro, Blake Ewing and Santana also recorded RBIs in the win, including three run batted-in from Santana.

On the mound, Harold Boyce improved to 4-2 on the year after throwing six shutout innings. He limited the Bobcats to just three hits while striking out two. Logan Creamer pitched the seventh to close out the 11-1 Pioneer win.

Point Park and Frostburg State will play two more on Saturday afternoon at Bob Wells Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
