Point Park Takes Over Sole Possession of First Place in MEC North Following Four-Game Sweep of Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Point Park baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Frostburg State on Saturday, defeating the Bobcats by scores of 12-4 and 4-3 on the road at Bob Wells Field in Frostburg.

Point Park has now won eight of its last nine games and improves to 29-11 overall and 18-6 in league play. The Pioneers now sit in first place in the MEC North Division with a two-game lead over Frostburg State (27-12, 16-8 MEC).

Game 1

In Saturday's first game, Point Park used a pair of three-run home runs by Luis Gonzalez and Jared Campbell to anchor its high-scoring offense for the second day in a row.

Gonzalez homered in the top of the second, clearing the left field fence to bring home Chris Williams and Isaac Santana for the 3-0 lead.

Frostburg State scored one run in the second and three more in the fifth to take a brief 4-3 advantage following five innings of play.

Trailing by one run, Omar Morillo, Jared Campbell and Santana each hit RBI singles in the top of the sixth, driving in two runs apiece to put the Bobcats in front by a 9-4 margin.

However, the Point Park bats continued in the seventh with Crixtian Taveras and Omar Morillo on first and second following singles. Jared Campbell brought them home with his three-run home run to left field, bringing the game's final score to 12-4.

Ramon Rodriguez earned the pitching decision for Point Park to improve to 4-2 on the season. Rodriguez allowed just one run on three hits and struck out five in his four innings of work. Ethan Parker pitched the final three innings for Point Park and earned his third save of the season.

Game 2

In game two on Saturday, the Campbell brothers gave the Pioneers an early 4-0 lead that Point Park was forced to hold on to later in the contest.

In the top of the first with Taveras on first, Jared Campbell hit his second home run of the day, this time a two-run shot to left field for an early Pioneer lead.

In the second inning it was Jordan Campbell's turn, and he took full advantage with a two-run bomb to left field to put a 4-0 advantage on the scoreboard. Trevor Jones was on first during Jordan's home run after being walked.

Tailing 4-0 in the bottom of the second, Frostburg got on the scoreboard with a solo home run to left field by Kade Abrisz.

The 4-1 lead held until the fourth, when Frostburg State scored a pair of runs on a Brian Scott RBI single and a Jackson Schalick sacrifice fly. Both runs were unearned after a Point Park error in the frame.

With Point Park still nursing its 4-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh, Frostburg State had runners on first and second with two outs. The Bobcat runners made it aboard with a single and a walk. However, after a pitching change to Harold Boyce, Point Park got the final out it needed on a ground-out to the shortstop to end the game.

Unlike the first three games of the series, Point Park was forced to use its bullpen early and often in game four. In total, six Pioneers took the mound, with Paul Ruiz earning the decision to improve to 2-0 on the season. Boyce got the save after recording the final out, his fourth of the season.

Samuel Georgiana made the start but only lasted two innings in the game.

Point Park will return to action on Wednesday afternoon with a non-conference road game at Seton Hill. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. The Pioneers already own a 10-6 win over Seton Hill back on April 1 when the Griffins ranked 12th in the nation.
