MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Point Park Baseball teams opened up a four-game series against Fairmont State with a split in Saturdays doubleheader at Mylan Park. Point Park dropped game one 5-2 before coming back with a big 13-6 win in game two against the Fighting Falcons.
Game 1
Point Park's offense was held quiet in game one as the Pioneers scored only two runs on four hits in the 5-2 loss.
Fairmont State started the game off with a big first inning plating four in the bottom of the first on three hits including two doubles.
The Pioneers got on the board in the top of the second as
Isaac Santana crossed home plate on a sacrifice flyout to right field by
Crixtian Taveras.
The Fighting Falcons put another run on the board in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to put Fairmont State up 5-1.
In the top of the seventh
Omar Morillo singled to center field to bring in
Edward Mateo bringing the score to 5-2 but the Pioneers were unable to score stranding two on base.
Javier Cardoso was tagged with the loss falling to 4-3 on the season. Cardoso went 4.0 innings giving up four runs on five hits while walking three and picking up a strikeout.
Samuel Georgiana threw 2.0 innings of relief giving up one run on three hits while having one strikeout.
Morillo led the Pioneers going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Taveras and
Joseph Pilewski had the other lone hits for Point Park.
Game 2
Point Park flipped the script in game two pounding out 13 runs on 13 hits to earn the split with Fairmont State.
The Pioneers picked up their first two runs of the game in the top of the first as
Isaac Santana hit a double to right center to score
Jared Campbell followed up by a
Joseph Pilewski RBI single to knock Santana in.
Point Park put up four more runs in the top of the third. Santana came through again to get things started for the Pioneers as the senior singled to center field to score
Omar Morillo.
Crixtian Taveras then got involved in the action as he hit a three-run home run to right center scoring Santana and
Jared Campbell to put the Pioneers up 6-0.
Fairmont State had a big inning of their own in the bottom of the fourth as they put up four runs on five hits and one error.
The Fighting Falcons had two single, two doubles, and a two-run home run to bring themselves back into the game with the score being 6-4 going into the top of the fifth.
The Pioneers put up two runs in the fifth as
Trevor Jones tripled down the right field line to score Taveras followed up by a Luis Gonazlez double down the left field line to score Jones.
In the top of the sixth, Taveras sent his second home run of the game with a grand slam over the left field fence to score Santana,
Jared Campbell, and
Omar Morillo for his seventh RBI of the game, putting the Pioneers up 12-4.
Fairmont State added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run, but the Pioneers quickly got the run back in the top of the seventh as
Luis Gonzalez led the inning off with a solo home run to right center.
The Fighting Falcons got one more run in the bottom of the seventh but that was all they earned as relief pitcher
Logan Creamer ended the inning with two pop-outs to first base.
Four Pioneers combined in the circle to go the distance.
Harold Boyce (3-1) picked up the win going five innings giving up four runs on eight hits while picking up eight strikeouts.
Ethan Parker came in for 1.0 inning giving up one runs on two hits.
Jonathan Ramallo went 0.1 innings giving up one run while issuing two walks.
Logan Creamer finished the game out going 0.2 innings with one hit.
Crixtian Taveras provided the Pioneers a huge offensive push going 3-for-4 with seven RBIs and three runs scored.
Luis Gonzalez and
Isaac Santana each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while
Trevor Jones went 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI.
Joseph Pilewski had the final RBI for the Pioneers going 1-for-4 in game two.

Point Park will finish the four-game series with Fairmont State on Monday with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 10:30 a.m. The Pioneers will enter the matchup at 21-9 overall and 10-4 in Mountain East Conference play.
