Bechdel, McKenna Set Program Records to Open 49er Classic

11 Pioneers enter top-five in program history

CHARLOTTE -- Elijah Bechdel shattered Point Park's program record in the 5,000m and Luke McKenna reset his program record in the 10,000m on Friday as Point Park track & field competed at the 49er Classic.

 

Bechdel posted a time of 15:06.62 - 7.5 seconds better than the previous best set by Luke McKenna at the 2025 49er Classic. 

 

Luke McKenna also set a program record on Friday, finishing the 10,000m in 31:50.38. McKenna's previous program-best time was 32:09.31.

 

TOP-FIVE FINISHES

Bechdel and McKenna were two of 11 Pioneers to enter the top five in program history. Eight such finishes are in the top three in program history. 

 

Akeem Mustapha's 10.7-second time in the 100m is good for second in Pioneer history. Mustapha was previously third with a time of 10.88 seconds.

 

Mya Greschner re-upped her second-best 400m mark in program history on Friday. Greschner, the MEC Indoor Champion in the 400m, posted a time of 57.59 seconds, resetting her time of 58.08 seconds from last week.

 

Emma Roemer marked a distance of 5.55 meters in the long jump, good for second in program history. Roemer was previously third at 5.45 meters. Roemer also finished the 100m hurdles in 15.01 seconds, just shy of her program record of 14.48 seconds.

 

Maxwell Eaton improved on his third-best time in the 400m with his time of 49.14 seconds. Eaton's previous personal record was 49.53 seconds.

 

Chase Bowen sits in third place in PPU history in the 1,500m after his time of 3:58.48 on Friday, Bowen was previously fourth with his 4:01.83 time.

 

Jenna Manson improved on her third-best distance in the hammer throw on Friday, notching a mark of 38.06 meters.

 

Lindsay Simmons moved from fifth to third in PPU history in the 400m hurdles, finishing in 1:06.75.

 

Anna Babinyecz and Zabine von Westernhagen all set the fifth-best times in their respective events on Friday. Babinyecz finished the 1,500m in 4:50.15 and von Westernhagen set a time of 30:41.09 in the 10,000m.

Men

  • Kamar Sutherland* - 110m hurdles - 14.89 seconds

  • Christian Reid* - 400m - 49.15 seconds

  • Ben Blahovec - javelin - 54.11 meters, fifth place (currently fifth in PPU history at 54.11 meters)

  • Ben Williams - javelin - 53.73 meters, sixth place

Women

  • Jana Schmid - 1,500m - 4:47.70 (currently fourth in PPU history at 4:44.19)

  • Cassondra O'Connor* - 10,000m - 36:34.29

  • Dunya Van den Tooren* - heptathlon - 4,195 points

Point Park will finish the 49er Classic on Saturday.
