BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Point Park baseball swept the MEC weekly honors, with Olindo Pezzone being named MEC Player of the Week and Ramon Rodriguez being named MEC Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Both awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Pezzone, a sophomore from Struthers, Ohio, recorded five hits in just 10 at bats over the Pioneers' four games last week. Pezzone went 5-for-5 in Point Park's first game against St. Michael's on Saturday, including a whopping four home runs, and double, and 11 RBIs.
Pezzone hit a three-run homer in the first inning and a grand slam in the second. He added solo shots in the fourth and sixth. Pezzone's lone non-home-run hit in PPU's 18-3 win was a two-RBI double in the seventh inning.
Ramon Rodriguez pitched a complete-game shutout for Point Park on Friday against Barry, allowing just two hits and striking out 10. Rodriguez didn't walk any batters and didn't allow any extra-base hits in Friday's contest.
A native of Cayey, Puerto Rico, Rodriguez lowered his ERA to 3.46 in Friday's 1-0 victory and improved to 1-0 on the season.
Point Park will return home on Saturday when it opens MEC play with a doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
