Point Park dominates Salem, next up at No. 10 CMU on Wednesday

Box Score

PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University volleyball dominated Salem (W.Va.) University in a 3-0 victory Tuesday night at the Student Center Gym in Downtown Pittsburgh. The Pioneers cruised by scores of 25-8, 25-10, 25-12 in their home opener to improve to 9-1 on the year.

The Pioneers amassed 16 service aces to make quick work of the Tigers, formerly known as Salem International University. Next up for Point Park is a local matchup of teams off to great starts with Wednesday's meeting at NCAA Division III No. 10-ranked Carnegie Mellon, which is 10-1.

Point Park's offense was in high gear with a hitting percentage over .400 for the match. The service line was also productive with the Pioneers racking up the points from there. Maria Ferragonio served five aces, Haley English had four, and Brittney Bianco had three.

The kills were spread around to six different hitters with Ferragonio and Taylor Small picking up seven each. English was very hot early on and totaled six kills. Ferragonio came on strong in the third set for several of her kills. Madison Sima, Jazlyn Rozier and Camryn LaMonaca posted five kills each. LaMonaca had all of hers in the first set.

Julia Menosky, Bianco and Ferragonio all spent time at setter during the match, and they combined for 29 assists. Ashley Castelli picked up seven digs and one service ace. Point Park kept the pressure on with the serve and the attack, which limited Salem from getting very many attacks together. The Tigers sent many free balls over the net, setting up the Pioneers for a high-percentage chance.

Wednesday's matchup with Carnegie Mellon will be at 7 p.m. Live video and stats are scheduled to be provided with links at PointParkSports.com/Live.
